This rooftop garden is 16 stories high above the Upper West Side of NYC. I started it very late in the growing season (mid-June) and the selection of flowers and plants was somewhat limited. At this stage it is both a research project and feasibility study in preparation for a formal presentation and petition for approval to the board of directors of my building. Therefore, this tiny little oasis in a wasteland of rock chips may be only a temporary dream for me...
I collected and transplanted some of Riverside Park's native plants that I have enjoyed ever since I was a child: ailanthus, nightshade, pokeweed, lamiastrum, wild violets, sweet woodruff, virginia creepers, hostas, malva sylvestris, and a fabulous grape-leaved vine that produces brilliant turquoise, purple and magenta berries (the rugged Porcelain Berry vine) .

The Board never gave me a chance to present my case for a roof garden. I was told by the manager of the building to dismantle my garden and, subsequently, alarm locks were placed on every door of the rooftop stairwells. What a pity...none of my plants survived their transplanting to the dark, ground-level interior of our building's courtyard.
